In Defense of Finance Bros
Hi All,
I have kept the readers of this newsletter shielded (by design) from my more colorful commentary on culture and politics.
But this week on Moral Mayhem — the podcast I host with my partner Regan — we discussed why middle men and financiers - from ancient moneylenders to modern hedge funds - are unique objects of scorn in the eyes of the public. We touched on several topics that O&O readers might enjoy - the ethics of payday lending and consumer credit, the social value of public markets, positive externalities of active management and the oft-repeated claim that finance “sucks up too much talent”. In our introductory segment, we discuss Shrimp Welfare — an esoteric interest of the Effective Altruism movement that has recently been trending on Substack.
